It’s sweet Summertime! Entertaining is as essential to summer as beach trips, cold treats, and evenings filled with fireflies. In our busy schedules, we must slow down and reconnect with those close to us. What better place to do that than your backyard? Getting everyone together doesn’t have to be stressful for you as the host. We’ve put together five ways to make your summer party memorable and fun.
GIVE GUESTS ENOUGH TIME TO PLAN
With events going on, summer calendars tend to fill up fast. The earlier you send out invites, the better.
If your event is casual, a couple of days’ notice is acceptable. If formal is the theme, give guests about three weeks’ notice. To help you prepare, ask those coming to RSVP by a specific date.
PREP YOUR HOME
Once you send the invites, begin preparing for your summer party a little bit each day to prevent overwhelm. Neaten up your yard, clean up inside, and focus on the areas in your home that guests will see, like the entryway, kitchen, bathrooms, etc.
If having a housewarming party to celebrate your new home, guests will likely expect to walk through each room. Plan for tours if that makes you comfortable.
MAKE A LIST, AND CHECK IT TWICE
Make a list of what you have and need for the party. Your list may include enough chairs, coolers, ice, citronella candles, and serving ware. Before you purchase anything new, shop your stuff. Renting can also be an affordable option depending on what you need.
MENU – KEEP IT SIMPLE
Make the menu planning easy for yourself and think about foods that are in season. Take advantage of summer foods like fresh fruit and vegetables, and be mindful of potential food allergies your guests may have. A potluck party is also a great option to lighten your load as a host.
SET THE MOOD
A welcoming party atmosphere doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Simple touches like fresh flowers and greenery add charm, and a natural fragrance can set an inviting mood.
Consider adding some overhead lighting. Hang lanterns or string lights in your backyard.
Create a summertime playlist to have on while the party is in motion, and be sure to choose music that will keep it fun and light.
Encourage your guests to stay awhile by having items they may need. Examples could be bug spray, blankets, and smores supplies!
Be wary of weather surprises if having your party primarily outdoors, and have a backup plan.
ENJOY THE PARTY
Remember to relax above all! People will remember the way you made them feel. Try not to get too caught up with everything you must do to keep the party going. Take the time to relax and visit with your guests.
Everything probably won’t go exactly according to plan, and that’s ok! Your reaction will set the tone for your party. If you keep your spirits up, your guests will have a lovely time!
