Cities rich with history also come with some intriguing ghost stories! Huntsville, Alabama, and its surrounding towns are no exception. With Halloween just around the corner, we are sharing some of North Alabama’s spookiest locations.

Dead Children’s Playground

One of Huntsville’s most notorious haunted spots is a playground behind Maple Hill Cemetery, known as Dead Children’s Playground. Legend has it that the children buried in the nearby cemetery come out to enjoy the playground. It is a popular spot for people to go and attempt to ghost-watch! People have reported seeing all kinds of strange happenings, including empty swings moving without wind. Want to check it out? Visit the address. 1351 McClung Ave SE, Huntsville, AL 35801

Salem Witch House Replica

While not known to be haunted, Huntsville’s Witch House is a unique spooky find. This home was built in 1995 as a replica of the 17th century Witch House in Salem, Massachusetts, originally built by the judge who sentenced 19 accused witches to death during the Salem Witch Trials. The owner of Huntsville’s replica said the original’s simplicity inspired them.

During Halloween, the owner likes to put on a witch’s hat, grab a broom, and lean into the witch theme as they welcome trick-or-treaters to their unique home. To see the house, visit the address. 133 Walker Ave NE Huntsville, AL 35801

Weeden House

The historic Weeden House Museum and Garden was built in 1819. It was the home of poet and painter Maria Howard Weeden. The house has more than 200 years of history, so it’s no surprise that it is one of the most haunted Huntsville homes. An interesting fact about the structure is that it is sometimes referred to as “weeping house” because there are parts of the exterior that always peel away no matter how many times it’s painted.

Legend also has it that the ornate grandfather clock with no working parts will chime on its own. Even a rocking chair in an upstairs bedroom won’t seem to stay put in one place!
See the home at 300 Gates Ave SE, Huntsville, AL 35801

Huntsville Train Depot

The Huntsville Train Depot is a great place to learn about north Alabama’s railroad history, and it’s also said to be haunted! Several Confederate soldiers were held prisoner at the Depot during the Civil War. Legend has it that you can hear and see soldiers walking around on the second and third floors, and a train engineer has been seen checking to make sure the tracks are clear.
Visit the depot at 320 Church St NW, Huntsville, AL 35801
